DOUG & DIANE CLEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS2026 Celebration
The annual Achilles Celebration was held in late February at which the latest Clement Scholarship student athletes were recognized. SFU Coach Tom Dickson and UBC Head Coach Laurier Primeau introduced their athletes and expressed gratitude that due the Clement Scholarships these top ranked athletes are being able to stay in Canada to compete, study and flourish. See below their pictures and brief biographies.

Raiya Matonovich
Middle Distance – 800m, 1500m, 5000m and X-country.
Top Achievements – In 2024, top ranked in 800m U18. Silver medals at Cdn. National Championships in U18 800m and 4x400m relay. Plus 2nd in senior girls at BC x-country championships. In 2025, at Cdn Nationals in U20- gold in 1500m and silver in 800m. In 2026, Female Track Athlete of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) indoor meet with 3 golds in 800m, mile and 4000m medley relay.
Academic – 1st year SFU in School of Communication
Volunteerism – Supporting young athletes (grades 3 -10) in sport camps with focus on access and participation
Awards – SFU Entrance Scholarship, BC Excellence Academic Scholarship, SFU Athletic Award and Hal Werner Track & Field Award. In 2026, BC Athletics U20 Female Athlete of Year for 800M to 1500m.

Hometown – Kamloops, BC
Emma Cannan
Sprinter – 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m
Top achievements – In 2025, 3rd in 200m National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 2 Nationals, 6th in senior 100m Canadian Nationals. In 2026, breaking Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) records for 200 and 400m.
Academic – 3rd year SFU majoring in Communications.
Volunteerism – at local track meets as an official, track set up, announcing and coaching.
Awards – Nominated for SFU Freshman of the Year in 2022. In 2025, SFU Strong Award. Clement Scholarship 2026.
Hometown – Kelowna, BC
Zachary Jeggo
Sprinter, Hurdler – 100m, 200, 400m
Top Achievements – In 2024, Canadian Nationals U18 track champion in 400m hurdles and second in 400m. In 2025, at Canadian Nationals gold medallist in 400m hurdles, member of U20 record breaking 4x400M team and bronze in in 400m. Silver medalist in 400m at Canada Summer Games in St. John’s NL. In 2026, at Spokane indoor meet became all time fastest Canadian teenager running 400M in 46.72 seconds and broke conference record.
Academic – 1st year SFU in Criminology
Awards – Male performance of the 2026 Great Northwest Athletic Conf. (GNAC) Indoor Championships for record breaking 400m (46.72)

Hometown – Embrun, ON
Peter Kunka
Middle Distance Runner – 800m, 1500m, 3000m and X-country.
Top Achievements – In 2024, Winner of Sr AA Boys BC provincial championship and 5th in U18 Canada Cross Country Championships. Also, first in BC High School 3000m.
Academic – 1st year Arts at SFU in Philosophy
Volunteerism – Coaching Gr. 7 boys basketball and volunteer for large church events.
Awards – Clement Scholarship 2026.
Hometown – Summerland, BC.


Lauren Curtis
Hammer Thrower
Top Achievements – U18 Canadian national champion (2022, 2023). U20 Cdn national champion (2025). 2025 Canada Summer Games St. John’s NF – Bronze in U24 (at age 19).
Academic – 2nd year UBC Bachelor of Arts – Economics and French.
Volunteerism – Volunteer at many track meets, seniors’ facilities and various activities at high school.
Awards – 2023 Premier’s (BC) Award for Indigenous Youth Excellence in Sport (including commitment to their education and culture, and promotion of healthy active lifestyles). In 2025, BC Athletics U20 Female Athlete of Year. Kajaks Varsity Award – Outstanding performance. Kajaks Award for Outstanding Performance by U20 Female. Kajaks Collier Award – Outstanding performance by a Throws Athlete.

Andrew Corbeil
Middle Distance Runner – 800m to 3000m, X-country.
Top achievements – 2025 All-Rookie Team Can West X-country. In 2024, Canadian U18 Indoor Track championships 2nd in 3,000m and 3rd in 1,500m. At U18 Ontario Outdoor Track championships 2nd in 3,000m.
Academic – 1st year UBC Applied Science
Volunteerism – Kitchener-Waterloo Legion fund raising and organizing, and Community/Church Volunteer
Awards – 2024 High School top math and science awards. In 2025, Governor General’s (Academic) Award.
