Olympic-Calibre Athletics Takes Centre Stage at Swangard Stadium – FIFA Leaves the Pitch
BURNABY, B.C. – Vancouver is wrapping up its official hosting duties for the FIFA World Cup, but the excitement of international sport is just getting started in Burnaby.
On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the Jerome Classic returns to Swangard Stadium, welcoming Olympic, World Championship and international track and field athletes from around the world for one of North America’s premier athletics competitions.
As the global spotlight shifts from the football pitch to the track, Burnaby will once again become home to elite international competition—offering local residents and visitors another opportunity to witness world-class athletes competing at the highest level.
As part of the World Athletics Continental Tour, the Jerome Classic has built a proud legacy of bringing future Olympic champions, world record holders and Canada’s top athletes to Burnaby. The event continues that tradition in 2026 with an evening of elite racing, jumping and throwing featuring athletes representing countries from across the globe.
Unlike large international sporting events, the Jerome Classic offers fans an intimate experience where every seat is close to the action. Spectators can watch Olympic-calibre athletes warm up, compete and celebrate just metres away, creating a unique connection between fans and sport.
A Community Event with International Appeal
For decades, Swangard Stadium has been home to some of Canada’s most memorable track and field performances. This July, Burnaby once again welcomes the world while providing local families, youth athletes and sports fans with an affordable opportunity to experience international competition in their own community.
With adult tickets starting at just $16, and youth admitted free with the purchase of one accompanying adult ticket, the Jerome Classic is one of the most accessible world-class sporting events in British Columbia.
Whether inspired by the energy of the FIFA World Cup or simply looking for an unforgettable summer evening, sports fans can keep the momentum going with another international event just minutes from home.
Olympians & Star Power
Canadian Olympians set to compete include Sarah Mitton in Shot Put, Rowan Hamilton in Hammer Throw, Jacqueline Madogo in the 100m, Michelle Harrison, and Craig Thorne in the 100m Hurdles and 110m Hurdles.
Also watch for rising talent including Matti Erickson in the 800m and Maya Piesik, who broke the Canadian National U18 3,000m RW record at last year’s meet.
In the Meet’s fastest event, watch for more Olympians including Nigerian Usheoritse Itsekiri.
The event is also scheduled to feature Paralympians including two-time Paralympic Games gold medallist (Paris 2024) in the high jump and 100m, Ezra Frech.
Cheer on Canada and other nations at this World Athletics Continental Meet, part of Athletics Canada National Track & Field Tour.
