THE JEROME CLASSICLEGACY
2021
At the 2021 Harry Jerome Track Classic in Vancouver, Evan Dunfee delivered a remarkable performance in the 10,000 m racewalk, setting a new Canadian record with a time of 38:39.72, shaving nearly 15 seconds off his previous best. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, including a limited field and the absence of other competitors to pace against, Dunfee relied entirely on his own internal rhythm, which he described as his “internal metronome.” This solo effort not only broke the national record but also stood as the fastest time in the world for that season, boosting his confidence heading into the Tokyo Olympics.
The meet, though constrained by pandemic restrictions, still showcased other notable Canadian performances. High jumper Mike Mason cleared 2.30 m, Luc Bruchet achieved a 5,000 m Olympic standard, and Regan Yee ran a personal best in the steeplechase. For Dunfee, the experience of walking alone reinforced his ability to maintain focus and discipline without external cues — an achievement he considered crucial preparation for the challenging conditions he expected at the Olympics.
Overall, the Harry Jerome Classic provided both a platform for record-breaking performances and a test of resilience for athletes like Dunfee, who transformed a pandemic‑disrupted race into a defining career moment.
