With Swangard Stadium unavailable due to a resurfacing of the track, the event was moved to cozy Perry Percy Stadium in Coquitlam. Canada’s triple 2016 Olympic medalist Andre De Grasse was the headline.
He won the 100 metres in 10.17 seconds and then was mobbed by hundreds of autograph seeking fans who kept him on the track for nearly an hour after the race. “This is fun,” said. “I’m kind of speechless the way it happened, just an incredible feeling.”
Local product James Linde delighted the fans by finishing second to De Grasse in 10.42 and winning the 200 metres in a personal best time of 20.76. Canadian decathlon champion Damian Warner won the 110-metre hurdles (13.79) and the long jump (7.48 metres) and Canadian 800-metre record holder Melissa Bishop ran away from the field to win her event in 2:00.11.
