THE JEROME CLASSICLEGACY
1998
Donovan Bailey didn’t run the 100 metres, citing a heel injury, but he did anchor a relay team featuring fellow Olympians Bruny Surin and Glenroy Gilbert, and Canadian teammate Trevino Betty to victory in the 4×100 relay. American newcomer Ja’Warren Hooker, a freshman at University of Washington trying to decide between playing football and running, easily won the 100 metres in 10.33 seconds, extending his unbeaten streak to 13 races while Philomena Mensah took the women’s race in 11.59. Shane Niemi prevailed in the men’s 400 metres while Leah Pells was again best in the women’s 1,500 metres with a 4:12.55 effort. Johnny Gray added yet another 800-metre title to his victory chest while Mozambique’s Tina Paulina was an easy winner in the women’s 800 metres.
