THE JEROME CLASSIC
LEGACY

2023

At the Harry Jerome Track Classic, Sarah Mitton put on a powerful display in the women’s shot put, launching a season-best throw of 19.83 m, which crushed the previous 1992 meet record by a full two metres. She admitted the season had started a bit rocky after making technical changes, but said things are now “coming together” as she builds toward bigger meets.

Mitton’s throw was just one highlight in a broader wave of meet records that evening. Camryn Rogers won the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 76.12 m, surpassing the previous Jerome Classic record. Ceili McCabe ran a personal-best 9:28.67 in the women’s 3,000 m steeplechase, topping the old 9:31.07 record. In the rarely-run women’s 5,000 m, veteran Briana Scott obliterated the previous meet record with a time of 15:19.51.

On the sprinting side, Maia McCoy clocked 11.16 s to win the women’s 100 m, bettering a prior Jerome mark of 11.21 s. Meanwhile, Shakeem Hall‑Smith set a new meet record in the 400 m hurdles, running 49.25 s, and breaking the old mark of 49.46 s.

There was also a strong relay performance: a young Canadian mixed 4×400 m team ran 3:15.20, establishing a new national record, though they fell just short of the world‑championship qualifying time.
